How many times would you wear a brassiere before washing it?

Wouldn’t you like to know? Wouldn’t we all indeed.

First thing first, I am not a bra user myself – and as a member of the male tribe was 102% surprised to hear bra washing is merely optional. So if you don’t have to wash bras every time you wear them, how often should you wash it then?

And the answer is..

Out of 250 respondents, the most common choice was “Up to 5 times” with 42.6% of the population.

On the dirty side of things, 14% will wear a bra more than 10 times before washing. Nice!

Under 34 wear over 10

That is indeed a weird conclusion, however true nonetheless. For the next conclusion we had to assign numeric values to the answers we got.  so what did we do? If someone answer up to 5 times, we counted them as wearing their bra exactly five times before washing. Is that fair? Yes. Why not.

So what did we find?

Apparently the # of ‘bra wares before washing’ by age drops significantly with time as you can see in the chart.

In short is says bra users under 34 wear their bras more than 10 times before washing on average. The exact average for the 30 years old group is  12.3 times. Comparing that with 6.5 times for 60 years old says that if the change was linear you will be wearing a bra one time less before washing every 5.2 years.

Tell me where you live, and I’ll tell you when you last washed that bra

I get it. Bras are very delicate and washing them is very time consuming. Add that to the fact that no one but you really knows when you last washed it. Usually.

And so, it appears that Americans living in rural areas wash their bras about once a week – or once in 6.8 wears (is it bra-day already?). That’s 46.3% more bra washing than suburban women who wash once in 10 days. Right down the middle we have urban population with 8.8 wears per wash.

Perhaps commute time is the reason for that. Rural folks spend about 50% less time commuting. Does that mean they have time to wash 46.3% more bras?

Can you tell which one never washed a single bra?

  1. A bra is not easily exposed to dirt except during a hot season when the heat of the sun causes much sweat; else I wouldn’t mind wearing my bra more than ten times as different from my usual 7.
